Before you get in touch
Beginning therapy often comes with questions. These are some of the things you might be wondering before starting. You can read whichever seem useful, and ask about anything else when we speak.
What happens in the first conversation?
The first step is a free telephone conversation of up to 20 minutes. It gives us a chance to talk briefly about what brings you to therapy, what you are looking for, and whether working together seems appropriate.
You can choose a time for it directly through the online booking system.
What happens if we decide to work together?
If it seems appropriate to continue, we can arrange a first 50-minute therapy session. Sessions are face-to-face and normally weekly.
The first few sessions give us time to begin understanding what has brought you here, what you are looking for, and whether the therapy feels useful.
Do I need to know what I want to work on before I begin?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis or a clear explanation for what is happening, and you don’t need to have everything worked out before beginning.
You might know that something isn’t right, or simply feel stuck without being able to say exactly why. Therapy can begin there, with whatever feels important enough to bring.
How will we know whether the therapy is helping?
This can look different from one person to another. I think it matters that we can talk about the therapy itself, including whether something is helping, whether it isn’t, or whether something in the way we are working needs to change.
We can work out together what fits and what doesn’t.
Why do we meet weekly?
Sessions are normally weekly, though we can talk about practical arrangements when we first meet.
Meeting each week gives the work a regular rhythm and continuity. It means we can return to things that have come up, rather than needing to work everything out in a single conversation.
What if I’m interested but not sure whether I’m ready?
You don’t need to decide in advance that you want to begin. The first telephone conversation is a chance to ask questions and get an initial sense of whether I might be the right person for you to speak with.
There is no commitment to book a session, and it is fine to take your time.
